I want to throw something out into the 'verse.
I have been batting around the idea of a lightning enabled mail system for awhile. I think it's time to move forward on it.
I for one am tired of spam. There have been a number of attempts at stopping it in the past. It's something like 80 or 85% of mail.
So it's time to do something about it. Let's integrate lightning with the standard email protocol.
Anyone in(terested)? I have a lot of ideas about it. Going to take more than one person.
Rust experience would be great. The general idea would be to take a current rust smtp server and adapt it for lightning use as well as whatever we would need to keep it "separate" from standard email.
Where does this idea come from? Adam Currey and Dave Jones have been developing "Podcasting 2.0" integrating lightning and other new features to create an innovative and excellent podcast listening experience.

I am pretty sure you can run a self hosted email server with your own lightning address and combine the two, i've seen some chatter on I think zebdee was going to add the feature to their wallets

The entire notion of email is retro. Instant messaging should be the future, conversations organized by individuals and groups. At present the most progress in this arena is with Matrix in my opinion. I don't see any advantage of clogging the lightning messaging layer with chit chat chatter.
Anonymous contacts should pay to send you a message, and it can all go into a single "bed pan" for you to fish out the turd you're looking for. Otherwise you simply add contacts who you want to be able to recieve free messages from, or set the contact message fee rate to nonzero for various reasons.
To bridge the gap during adoption, a web interface can be used allow email users to be directed by auto responder and let them pay to send a message with a simple lightning enabled form.

I would disagree, email is interoperable with all email, is there an IM that's interoperable with each other? Not that I am aware of, they are all walled gardens
reply
Matrix isn't a walled garden.

Can I send a matrix user a whatsapp? because I can send a gmail user an email from any client and vice versa

Yes read about it

I did, I run synapse and elements, those puppet bridges are well shit, I wouldn't call that interoperability compared to mail clients
