I've used Memrise and Duolingo extensively when learning Spanish. Memrise was great for drilling me with vocabulary, and Duolingo did a good job at teaching me grammar.
What are your favorite apps?
Oh yeah.. almost forgot to mention this one, I know the insane AI personal tutors are right around the corner... I don't really use AI much but this is a damn good use case in my opinion.
I could imagine many ways to use it now that I should experiment with. The ChatGPT mobile app has voice and speech capability now so I tried using it the other day, just told it "act as my Spanish tutor, ask me some questions and gauge my level, adjust accordingly and help me work on my weak points" etc.
It seemed entirely capable of doing a really good job at this. The only issue was it was talking too fast for me and when I asked it to slow down it wasn't able to do that.
I'm sure within the year there will be amazing dedicated apps which can give you a conversation partner, figure out what you need to study, then just plug a bunch of flashcards into your anki deck or tool of choice and so on.
If I find any breakthroughs here I'll share them. Curious if anyone else has used AI for language practice?

Very good use case indeed. I should definitely try it out and see how one can leverage it. I'm sure there are already some wrappers trying to do this, but it's the wild west out there...

Anki is a powerful open source tool for this.
reply
Indeed. Anki is great, especially for making your own flashcards. Making one's own cards helps the process dramatically, but I mostly ended up using pre-made lists for my languages...

Yeah I've been trying to be a purist and make my own deck, but it's definitely slow going. There are some good plugins that speed things up a ton though. I may switch my approach in the future after I finish a foundation of about 1k words.
What language are you learning now? I'm working on Spanish.
Edit: I just saw on another post you're learning Korean. That seems like it would be challenging!
reply
Right now, not actively learning Korean, but due to my personal conditions, I get to use it nearly every day... so definitely some passive learning going on.

Gymglish.com is very good.
