No, I did not know. Presumably it just assumed they had a process running on a certain port on the IP and the sender could use that to communicate the transfer?
Pretty much.
But I think Satoshi's main reason was to have this as a part of the whole decentralised market thing.
There are some comments in the code for this, where it was meant to do some checking against orders and such.
