If i understand correctly standing armies give the perception of safety and power, but the problem is they inevitably turn on their own citizens due to the big power disparity. Militias are the way forward for proper peace, but it is intidimidating and has an emphasis on personal responsibility. "Wait a minute, i have to risk my own life for this? no thanks" and that is why standing armies are so appealing. Just pay a little tax, and you will be totes fine. But within a generation, that tax has gone up many times, and you might regret what you originally signed on to. The problem is, they have the power, and not much you can do now. Sad
