I don't work at one but frequent them and support them. The last one I went to reminded me of a surgical hospital at wartime: so much need, much of it urgent, so few resources to meet that need. I expect if you showed up and said I'm available to help at these times, is there anything I could do? they would gratefully accept.
Yes. That's what I'm planning. I guess it would be satisfying, but also depressing.

I think that's a fair description -- probably the former in proportion to the latter, but it will take it out of you. I think they vary in their intensity and you can probably find a more chill one, but if you want to help where help is most needed it will probably tax you in some ways, blow your mind in others.
