Vocal fry is that raspy sounding almost hoarse addition to a vocal. It can be applied at the top of your vocal chords in an almost hissing sound. Or in a whisper shout/roar (like some screamo metal) alternatively sometimes it can be generated from the "false chords" and that usually generates a really growly boomy scream. Also used in metal.
