Major Florida GOP Donors Stand to Make Windfall Profits If Recreational Cannabis Is LegalizedMajor Florida GOP Donors Stand to Make Windfall Profits If Recreational Cannabis Is Legalized

Ron DeSantis still opposes recreational cannabis, but his handpicked Supreme Court justices are coming around.

JUST TWO YEARS ago, conservative justices appointed to the Florida Supreme Court by Gov. Ron DeSantis repeatedly quashed efforts to move toward legalized recreational cannabis.

The court, which DeSantis has stacked with allies, issued three rulings in as many months that blocked the expansion of access in the state’s medical cannabis industry, one case relating to regulations and two to ballot initiatives. WHAT IS NON-MEDICAL CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a substance naturally present in the cannabis (or hemp) plant. It is one of its many active compounds. These compounds can be found in all parts of the plant. CBD is mainly present in flowers and leaves found on flowering stems of cannabis plants.

Before being marketed and made available in different forms (oil, pellets, drops, sweets, but also liquid for vaping...), CBD is extracted from cannabis and then purified, i.e. cleaned of other active compounds that may be present.

CBD can also be consumed directly from the plant as an infusion or as a dry powder in capsules or in bulk.

CBD is also used in skin applications in the form of massage oils, sometimes combined with other plant extracts such as arnica.

Over-the-counter CBD is widely used as a way to fight:

Insomnia;

Stress and anxiety;

Chronic pain;

Spasms (involuntary muscle contractions).

However, products containing CBD cannot, under penalty of criminal sanctions, claim therapeutic claims, unless they have been authorised as a drug.

CBD is considered, as food supplements, as a "new food". It is being evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority.

No scientific study formally confirms these benefits. Current data on the effects of CBD come mainly from the recognition by scientists that CBD could act on many biological targets in the body and on consumer testimonies.
