Just running a core node gets you:
- copy of the blockchain to verify transactions on your own in a private way
- enforce desired ruleset for bitcoin
- run your own block explorer to view & sort through transaction info
if you aren't running your own, someone else is running one for you when you spin up your wallet.
Running a bitcoin core node will get you to learn a little more about bitcoin, and your transactions will be more private as a result. The barrier to entry is relatively low. It's something I genuinely think every bitcoiner should eventually get around to if they're able.
Run a LN node if:
- you want to learn about liquidity
- you want non-custodial LN payments
- you are already running a bitcoin node
- you want to be more sovereign
