Ultimately I think AI should be regarded as a 2nd Amendment issue. Each person will need personal AI agents to combat the big-gov / big-tech AI agents.
Just like with 2A, the combined "firepower" of millions of individual and decentralized AI agents will be enough to keep the centralized forces in check.

How it works:
Nightshade seeks to “poison” generative AI image models by altering artworks posted to the web, or “shading” them on a pixel level, so that they appear to a machine learning (ML) algorithm to contain entirely different content — a purse instead of a cow, let’s say. Trained on a few “shaded” images scraped from the web, an AI algorithm can begin to generate erroneous imagery from what a user prompts or asks.

Garbage in, garbage out, but it's just an arms race. If don't want your art to be consumed by AI, and you're any good, then you're probably going to miss out on lots of real people from consuming your art.

People who are used to relying on government enforced monopolies via trademarks, copyrights, patents, and lawsuits feel threatened by tools that make it easy to generate content because their previous methods will not work. Hence, the business in question sees this situation and is attempting to offer a remedy. Whether or not it works, it's a great sell to the desperate and frightened entities.
