People don't exist for the good of the law; laws exist for the good of the people.
It often feels like we have forgotten this and are just building a society designed to check boxes and fill out forms so we can point at all the paperwork and say, Look how mighty/just/equal/thorough/capable/fill-in-your-blank we are!
