Apparently Ron Wood, Rod and Ronnie Lane all recorded a lead vocal for the track and they went with Ron Woods. Rod and Ronnie did their own versions later, on their solo albums. Rods was a good one from 1989, had a nice Celtic feel

Sounds really different without Rod Stewarts voice. Not bad different, just different. Both vocalists bring something different to the track in their own way.
