That's what I was going to say. I mostly do statistical programming work and need to brush up on my Python since that's what the kids are doing these days.

I'll be the one who is fun at parties and will respond with: "It depends on what you want to do at some point". You won't like learning any language if you can't apply it to something that you're interested in and have fun doing.
Javascript if you want to do anything web-related. C/C++ if you want to do stuff that is close to hardware (embedded programming). Python for short programs to automate stuff (scripts). Java if you want to work with legacy tech or write Minecraft plugins.
Bust I guess for most beginners, trying to automate some annoying workflow is the best choice, so that's why Python is "the defacto beginner choice these days".1
