Mostro, a bitcoin exchange, emerges as a P2P alternative, focusing on user privacy. It uses the decentralised node network Nostr and Bitcoin's Lightning network, giving it the quality of being "uncensorable" by not relying on a single point of failure. The platform operates through a process where a seller creates an order, and a buyer takes it, facilitating the exchange of bitcoin for local currency.
The project, still in development, offers two versions: a user-friendly web version for non-specialized users and a terminal requiring specific commands. Mostro has a limit of 20,000 satoshis per transaction and aims to expand with web and desktop versions in the future.
Mostro's focus goes beyond simple cryptocurrency exchange; it presents itself as a peaceful response to authoritarian governments. @negrunch, a developer of Mostro, emphasises that the platform can be a valuable tool for people in countries with oppressive governments, providing secure and private transactions. The utility of Mostro is highlighted in situations where financial privacy is crucial, such as in countries with authoritarian regimes or where citizens are identified as opponents.
Mostro's operation is based on Lightning network nodes that route payments through generated invoices, and these nodes, called "Mostros," are run by users who receive commissions for their services. The reputation of these nodes is crucial, as users can rate them, incentivising their participation in the platform's payment processing.
Francisco Calderón, also the creator of the successful Telegram bot, lnp2pbot, highlights the importance of privacy in financial transactions, especially in authoritarian environments. Mostro emerges as an alternative to lnp2pbot, using the decentralised infrastructure of Nostr to avoid potential censorship.
Regarding the future, Mostro aims to grow organically, attracting users through testing, bug correction, and expanding the node network. The decentralised approach allows nodes to compete for commissions, promoting participation without the need to create large companies. The platform presents itself as a free and resilient tool, capable of operating effectively in various contexts, from situations of authoritarianism to privacy issues in developed countries.
If you want to try the web client, you can do it here
As mostro dev I suggest to everyone who find bugs or has some ideas to improve the interface via web to.drop a comment om github here: https://github.com/MostroP2P
and if other devs are joining we love evrybody. Daemon codebase is rust and vue for web, we'd love to have web, rust and mobile devs and designer onboard.to create the nicest lightning Mostro in the planet! Join us!

Glad to know you are around!

I think I will stick to the user-friendly web version non-specialized users as I don't do well with terminals

Utilizing Nostr to create a decentralized p2p buy/sell platform is perfect. I love it.
I would like more information on the specifics of how it works. I have used RoboSats many times, so how does Mostro's inner workings compare to that? Just curious, any information you can add would be great!
reply
As a regular user of lnp2pbot and nostr, I love this project. Will be using it for sure!

I'm always curious about conflict resolution with these kinds of projects. I've read a bit about that here and it mentions 'Mostro Administrators'. Who are they?
reply
In all the P2P markets there is a need for someone to solve disputes. That's one of the task done by the Admin.
reply
Yes. That part I fully understand. But who's the Admin? Can anyone become an Admin? How does that work?
reply
Yes, you can be a MOSTRO (node) and get some SATS for your services.
reply
Y'all need to improve on your User interface, it looks so bleak

Nodes and the reputation thing could be great for building online groups

Created a sell order. Does not show up...
reply
Because we don't sell around there

Diamond hands here
reply
Bullshit! I had those unhandy-dandy-handies removed! Now I can't sell regardless of my emotions!
reply
Could be that mostro sometimes is down because we are debugging daemon. Consider that we are just setting order with sats between 100 and 20k sats, using yadio as exchange rate service for not fixed price order.
reply
Sell?
Never heard of it.

Now just imagine that Mostro would work with eCash tokens. It would be privacy heaven .
reply
Yeah but wouldnt this limit the technology just to advanced users? I mean if just handling lightning in a non-custodial way is a headache and not worth it for a casual user why make it more complicated and unaccessible?
What's up with the 20k Sat limit? Seems like one would accrue many small UTXO'S through Mostro.
reply
The 20K sat limit is a temporary thing. The platform is brand new, so expect some bugs to interfere.
reply
If Nostro is running on LN, there is no UTXO to worry about.
reply
Ahh!

Don’t kill me but when I first saw Mostro, I immediately thought of the privacy coin called Monero haha
Thanks for the knowledge drop! Will check it out
reply
Nothing to do with Monero.
Mostro in Venezuelan spanish means monster...

Hmm taking account it uses nostr as base for Auth, the "Monstr" name would have been a good alternative.
Does anyone know what would be the advantage of using nostr for this instead of the disposable robot generation that robosats has?
How does this work?, I create buy/sell order, set the amount and currency. Then wait for the buyer/seller to transfer the money and send me a screenshot?. Or it uses a trusted party for that?.
