I think its a industry standard that was developed over the years.
Now its difficult to change.. Bit like the metric vs the imperial.
I learned obviously stick in EU and drove like 3 different systems and i will choose automatic every time if the car has more than 150/180hp.

We don’t really have much choice here in EU to chose auto when buying cheap cars. Theres no mechanics for automatic shifters ( there are but LOT less)..
This causes a fix of 3000 vs 1000 euros if manual. I know by experience.. My last 3 cars where automatic..
So, you end up paying more while buying because special config and then if breaks..

It's primarily an economic issue, as far as I can see.
