Alright, when does baseball season start? I need to move on from being let down by the 49ers mode to being let down by the Blue Jays mode.
It was an exciting game but if you want to beat a team with a championship pedigree you have to play a clean game which the 49ers did not. Was there some bad luck with untimely injuries sure but the 49ers were absolutely dominating in every facet of the game early but all they had to show for it was a 10-3 lead at halftime with the Chiefs getting the ball after the half. Biggest takeaway is they need to invest in the OLine having 3/5ths of your OLine suck and leaving guys like Chris Jones completely untouched on critical plays in the game isn't going to get it done. Purdy wasn't great. He wasn't terrible. He will learn from this and get better. Barring injuries to key players I expect the 49ers will be amongst the top teams in the NFC again next year.
Shout out to @Public_N_M_E who ran a really cool crossover Music x Sports post regarding halftime shows. I was locked into the game and completely missed it until logging on this morning.
Also, shout out to @tnuts420 for winning the Superbowl pick 'em. Nearly perfect. He had the Chiefs, Mahomes and missed the point total by one point. Did Shanahan learn that trick play from watching the Lions?
And finally shout out to @030a29f333 for winning the superbowl bracket challenge. 10k sats not bad.
It's been a really great season. I had a lot of fun chatting NFL with you guys and the Survivor pool was great. We will most definitely run the pool again next season. I am sure we will be chatting more NFL as the draft approaches.
See ya next season. Just kidding, see ya tomorrow for some riveting Spring Training conversation.
Sats for all, GR

Being let down by the Raptors doesn't even register apparently.

To be fair, the Raps are supposedly "rebuilding". Also, when there are no expectations, then the chances of being let down diminish.
reply
That is fair, but aren't they a let down at rebuilding, since there are so many teams tanking better than them right now?
reply
I loved their game against the Thunder. They played great against a good team and lost in double OT so you got to see the promise of what they could be but also picked up the L to not diminish their draft seeding. They are going to be on the bubble either way as to whether they lose their first rounder or not. They will probably need some draft lottery help.

I've rooted for plenty of losing teams and that's definitely the sweet spot. Of course, the Raiders then proceed to completely whiff on their draft picks usually.

Tanking is a dangerous beast in itself and teams that tank on purpose often take a very long time to recover. As much as tanking allows the team to obtain raw talent from the draft, these talents are nothing but raw. The new talents do not guarantee success. I think I don't have to remind you how many number 1 picks that went bust in any sport.
I believe when a team tanks on purpose, they enter a losing culture, which is a dangerous path that many teams are unable to turn away from. On top of that, this losing culture devours and destroys raw talent like a beast. For example, if you follow hockey, you will find that the Edmonton Oilers had tanked and tanked and got 3 number 1 picks in a row in the early 2010s. Yet, how much longer did it take for them to start winning again? Start actually making the playoffs? Even with one of the best players in the league in McDavid, they did not consistently make the playoffs until 2020.
Also, there are often players that are overlooked in the draft, the diamonds in the rough. Joker, Brunson, VanVleet, Middleton, Draymond Green all great players from the second round still active and playing. So yes, the draft means something, but its is not everything; and probably not worth entering a losing culture just to get a higher pick.
Unless, of course, if you're getting something like a Wembanyama, then it's a different story.

I totally agree with you. I hate tanking, beyond some reasonable roster management stuff: i.e. trading away talented aging vets when your team stinks and reorienting around your young talent.

Still setting myself up for a small let down in regards to the NBA draft lottery but that's a ways away. Jays can let me down way before that since the season starts in April.

Thanks for setting these things up, they're fun! Sat bounties are nice too ;)

Cheers for all you've facilitated over the season GR. It's been a real blast.
I do think if greenlaw hadn't gone out, the game ends different. Same with your RG, when he got injured suddenly purdy was getting a lot more heat.
Jennings looked like the real MVP to me, he was so clutch I think he's got a bright future.
Shanahan scheming aiyuk up against safety's was awesome play calling. But you can't get away with it all the time and sneed (when he keeps his helmet on) and McDuffie (who we never should have passed on) are bonafide studs at CB.
9ers looked like the better team right up until the final whistle, shame the scoreboard says otherwise.
As we approach the draft I'll be looking to put together a SN fantasy football league. I'll be throwing out some polls to see what sort of format people want to play. Eg IDP or Non IDP. Super flex etc etc.
Thanks again for such great content throughout the season and I look forward to working with you further on collaboration posts. 👊

Greenlaw getting hurt definitely opened up a lot for Mahomes in the short passing game. The LBs were taking the middle away early giving the pass rushers time to throw Mahomes off. Burks played well when he first came in to the game but they roasted him on the last couple drives. He is a good 3rd LB but not up to the standard of Warner and Greenlaw.
reply
Filling greenlaws shoes was a big ask and despite burks being a decent serviceable backup he's not greenlaw and Andy Reid/mahomes took advantage of that as you'd expect.
But you could definitely see the difference was night and day between what mahomes was able to get away with against your defense from when greenlaw was on field Vs when he wasn't.

i will admit seeing the team that knocked the lions out blow a lead in the second half, did make me feel a tiny bit better. plus the sats, and the fiat from taking the chiefs +2, didn't hurt either. i guess there's nothing to do now but wait for spring training.
thanks again for running all this stuff gr, it's been an honor throwing some sats around with all you degens this season!
