i see that there are lots of interesting charts, but the example at the bottom of your post is so much more powerful. i just don’t get why 80% of the post is taken up with the “About Us” section of the Our World in Data website.

It is not related. The quoted text is the about section of the website. If you go to the website, you will notice that it has dozens/hundreds of interesting charts. As I said before, I was just going to share the website without any charts, but then I decided to include an example.
