Torrents + ⚡️ looks like the perfect technology match to me.
Both are unstoppable - as long as two parties can connect to each other over the internet (so always - except for a catastrophic asteroid impact).
Incentivizing seeders with something like 100 sats/GB sounds like an awesome usecase.
https://www.impervious.ai/ might enable something similar - but they were supposed to launch in April, which unfortunately hasn't happened yet.
As long as two parties can connect over the internet, any type of data transfer is possible.
Torrents are about discovery of people with the file which you can simultaneously leech from afaict. If you already know the person that has the file, you don’t need torrents. And you can use something like Agora.
Torrents are still cool. Just kind of contesting the framing.

Cool, never heard of Agora before. Will check it out. Thanks!

hmmmm...torrents are kinda a thing of the past though aren't they? I haven't used a torrent in at least 3-4 years.
reply
Really? Torrents are great for large files sharing imo

For those who use services like netflix and such maybe but i like to download what I watch.

torrents were invented in the past, but they are in no way an archaic technology.

Far from it, the private torrent tracker scene is still alive and as vibrant as ever. However, it's not without its problems. Integrating lightning could solve many of those problems.

I still get 99% of my content through them. What is being used instead of torrents nowadays in your opinion?

With the insane speeds of internet now a days i dont think torrents are really necessary as they were back when a file/program took 24 hours to download and it had to run via something like limewire or utorrent in the background. Now you can download those programs in seconds straight from the internet web page.

No no, the thing about torrents is also that they are decentralized. They are redundancy. They work even when one central server fails. They keep records of niche and old stuff even when no one else does.
Torrents are awesome

There's a lot of content that cannot be found on any websites though...

I used to love to seed back in the day when I had the time. If I could earn some sats by seeding I would come back for sure

I think it would be great to imbue incentives into filesharing. Some data gets very rare and you can't buy it if you wanted!

I would like to see more BitTorrent BEP-46 in the wild. I think it would make a great pairing with BTC layer 2+ since it allows for mutable torrents so it can host a website on DHT instead of http
