As many of you probably have heard in the last few days
HDMI Forum to AMD: No, you can’t make an open source HDMI 2.1 driver
The reason for this development is crystal clear. The most widespread display connector in the world is at war with open source. HDMI 2.1 is the standard needed for using 4k and high fps simultaneously. Its only competitor being display port.
But is DP really a competitor? It's not like you can choose since all devices are on HDMI-only. Your USB-C cables use hdmi internally too. There are no TVs with Display Port. Basically only desktop computers sometimes use DP.
Most egregious of all is why this is happening: HDMI literally created for adding DRM to Cables. It's about piracy. And almost all hardware manufacturers are collaborators. HDMI capture cards do exists. But they're already cracking down on it. They don't want you to own any media.
It’s a shame the way HDMI forum refused AMD’s proposal. I just hope hardware manufacturers, especially tv manufacturers, will adopt HDMI less and less over the years in favor of DisplayPort or dp-over-usbC

HDMI 2.1 to World: we are gonna try the fuck around method. We want to find out.

Are Display Port the good guys? They're at the whims of a centralized non-profit as well. Competition is good. But real FOSS looks different.

Wont somebody reverse engineer it?

I have heard people claiming you actually can just make an hdmi cable and not pay the HDMI Forum a single Dollar - you're just not allowed to call it "hdmi". I don't know if that's true tho. I also wouldn't blame AMD - they've tried everything they could.

It looks like there are some DisplayPort 1.4 TVs out there. I'd suggest not buying an HDMI-only TV if you value open-source driver support.
reply
Are there any TVs that aren't hdmi-only? I have never seen a TV with Display Port.

AMD are into graphic card processing and should they get into the HDMI space, I see great growth in the space

Do we really need their media anymore? It's all trash and propaganda right?
We make better podcasts collectively 🙂

Displayport is better anyway @cyberpunk0101 .. SEE!

We don't own anything really. My headmovies are better anyway.

Remember Beta Max? I bet not. It went extinct because people refused to support it.
reply
Betamax also lost against VHS because Sony they refused to have porn material on their support. Not the only motivation, but had an impact in the end. Piracy and porn are the engine for diffusion, Bram Cohen said the same for bittorrent protocol.
reply
Yes. Porn and smut drive plenty of markets and technological trends although I think that is changing.

What are you talking about? Everyone does. Maybe if you're a teenager, that would explain it. Beta Max never had the market dominance that hdmi has now.
reply
Everyone as the only other person to reply to this thread. Point is standards change based on purchasing. VGA is still a thing.

I'm just finding out about all sorts of new things. I never would have thought this could be a problem before. Low-class elitists...
