Betamax also lost against VHS because Sony they refused to have porn material on their support. Not the only motivation, but had an impact in the end. Piracy and porn are the engine for diffusion, Bram Cohen said the same for bittorrent protocol.

Yes. Porn and smut drive plenty of markets and technological trends although I think that is changing.
