I’m Singaporean, and my country is featured in the last episode of the Blue Zones. Here’s the thing: I ironically didn’t watch only the last episode.
I can’t bear to watch it. I think the missing detail in the narrative is that while Singaporeans live long lives, their last decade tend to be riddled with pain and illnesses. We don’t age as gracefully as those living in authentic Blue Zones.
Having said that, we do have plenty of initiatives to promote a healthy lifestyle. Zero sugar drinks, dedicated cycling paths, money given to people who clock 10,000 steps, customised health plan for people with chronic diseases - my government authorities are doing their jobs well.
Incidentally, I thought it was amazing how I was watching Blue Zones and learnt the Costa Rica phrase plan de vida, which is similar to the Japanese concept of ikigai (life purpose)
