I'm cautious of anything docker management that isn't podman. That no root access is a very sweet security mechanism.

Well, distrobox uses podman at its core, but targets a completely different kind of user. Podman is more suited for “server” kind of apps, distrobox allows to easily install (and export in your DE) GUI apps that were packaged for other distributions. Still, both podman and distrobox are amazing.
