Critics note that the text may appear blurred from a distance, but at a normal reading distance, it remains sharp. Those hoping for page-turning buttons will need to opt for Oasis or Voyage, as this entry-level device only offers a touch screen. For most users, the touch screen proves ideal for page-turning and navigating the user interface. However, a notable drawback is the screen's darkness. Unlike other Kindle models, it lacks front lighting, with The eBook Readers stating, "My biggest issue with the new Kindle is how dark and gray the screen looks."

While it may feature the same 1GHz processor and 4GB memory, Amazon doubled the RAM to 512MB, making it twice as fast as its predecessor. Critics estimate a battery life of about 4 weeks with daily reading sessions of 30 to 45 minutes.

A new feature of the 2016 Kindle is Bluetooth audio support, linked to an accessibility feature called VoiceView designed for the visually impaired. This feature provides voice feedback to describe on-screen actions without requiring an adapter. Unfortunately, this Kindle does not support music files and cannot be used as an audio player.

Being the most affordable in the updated Kindle lineup means it lacks certain features like 3G connectivity, front lighting, and a microSD slot. The cheapest version also includes ads, although users can pay extra to remove them. Like the rest of the Kindle lineup, this model does not offer waterproofing.

Despite some cosmetic changes and new accessibility features, the 8th-generation Kindle remains largely unchanged from its predecessor. While reviewers acknowledge its improved aesthetics compared to the 2014 model, they find it challenging to wholeheartedly recommend. Digital Reader notes, "It's much prettier than the 2014 model and an improvement in every way, but my enthusiasm is tempered by the fact that I was satisfied with the 2014 model." PC Magazine adds, "The new Kindle is the best e-reader you can get for the least money, especially if you don't care about front lighting or have less than $100 to spend."
