In that case, I think it's mostly measuring reading for school assignments.

Yes, we Indians definitely read a lot.
That's why we have some of the longest books ever written. Some of the examples are 'the Mahabharata is the longest Epic poem and we also have Ramayana and Khambha Thoibi which also make it in the top 5.
