On February 22nd, there was the biggest solar explosion of this cycle, facing Earth, releasing intense electromagnetic radiation. The largest sunspot is twice the size of Earth, in addition to countless other peripheral spots, flares and filaments. The darker spots are regions of reduced temperature, caused by concentrations of magnetic field flux, which inhibit heat transfer between the surface and the inner part of the Sun.
