Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world.  The place was inhabited by the Jebusites, before the arrival of the Hebrew tribes in Canaan, at the beginning of the 13th century BC. It was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah, and centuries later, of the Frankish kingdom of Jerusalem. in 1950, its western part was declared the official capital of the State of Israel.

Jerusalem is considered a holy place for Jews, Catholics and Muslims.  Since its founding, more than five thousand years ago, the city has had a troubled history: it has been destroyed, invaded, surrounded and captured countless times.

Conflicts over its control continue to this day.

The city was dominated by Jews, Assyrians, Macedonians, Romans and Muslims.  During the First Crusade, in 1099, the Catholic Templars conquered the city.
