I was discussing SN with a friend and he raised a good point. We can’t downvote on the platform and that’s an issue I feel as controversial opinions are going to be weighted incorrectly.
We can’t take away satoshis from users (or can we?) so one suggestion would be that all downvote satoshis are directed to a charity or some kind of bitcoin dev fund? Maybe we vote on the allocation every 6 months or so.
We don't. Down votes are always use as a tool to suppress others even if the initial goal is not that, look at that cesspool of reddit for example
but how do SN prevents spam?
By doing what bitcoin does, incentivize good behavior as much as we can and make it extremely expensive to spam and flood SN with junk posts/links

I don't like the negativity that comes with downvotes.

Just wanna link this thread about downvoting.

Some interesting research in this area.
Here is a talk (time set)
About the need for both positive and negative feedback loops, and how it affects society.
They suggest that down votes are allowed, and the revenue is distributed to the whole community fairly, or burnt.

I think it could be argued that few or no upvotes constitutes a negative feedback loop. In such a case people are seeing your comment and choosing to ignore it.

I wish there was some way to vote on stuff that doesn't lead to acceleration of echo chambers. Seems to be a universal problem in social media platforms- algorithms feed you low value porn that stimulates your dopamine to keep you engaged.

I don't see the reason for downvoting on SN, downvoting is needed on normie platforms because both user interactions are FREE so you're trying to offer a counterbalance.
On SN you're literally voting up content with the hardest money on the planet, how much more signal do you need?

I don't think we need downvoting when you're essentially downvoting by not spending sats. This encourages people to spend more sats on posts that not only like, but also that they read or commented on. I need to practice more what I preach.
