I wish this genre wasn't so dystopic. The antagonist is usually society at large. I would prefer to read something with this inverted: tech is developed that has such great incentives, society thrives and inherits it, and the antagonist is a group of powerless luddites.
Peter Theil thinks that this bend in our fiction suggests we are all pessimistic about our futures. I think he's right.
