You've clearly gone beyond the normal level of research and so know the topic well. I would say we are a projection of light, however--ultimately.
At any point a human, any human can become an Arahant, Buddha, Bodhisattva or Christ!
Just to be a human is a sign that one has struggled over thousands of lives to enjoy this precursor to ultimate being. Yet the traps have been set and many of us fall into them as a result of ego, greed or mental illness (that can only be corrected from within).
Any one of these dark actors can wake up and find this light. Letting go of the fear mechanism not the absence of care mechanism is when the light is found within the darkness ☯️.
The principal of Care is very powerful. It is the way to liberation.

I'd disagree on anyone becoming Messiah. That's not an attainable trait. It is an assigned trait. Very enlightened, though, I'm sure "anyone can".

Messiah is a messenger. Christ is from darkness.
Luke 17:21 KJV
Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

I'd agree with that, but only because the name of Christ is not the right name for the Messiah. Eventually, He comes back, and kicks "Christ's" butt.

Do you think the journey is external or internal?
reply
Both.
