I've always found that good is people's default setting and it usually takes something bad happening to them before they become cold and bitter.

Everytime I've travelled, I'm amazed at how good people are when they haven't been poisoned by whatever it is that infects so much of the west.

Costa Rica, Cambodia as examples. The people there are just amazing. They live by a completely different code.
