I always love a good Ray Ratto rant, and this piece on the end of the Oakland Athletics's imminent move to Sacramento, along with the death of a minor-league hockey team in Newfoundland, was a blast to read. Sample quote:
From the moment the team announces its move to the minor-league park in West Sac as a response to their failed negotiations for a lease extension in Oakland, anyone who attends an A's game either in Oakland or the state capital is actively aiding and abetting a moron (last night's 800 fans disguised as 5,112, we're looking into your soulless eyes), and there will be no explanation in mitigation that satisfies. Sacramento will get to dance with the dunce who teased them on the way through town and deserves every mouthful of Elks club ashtray it gets.
Today I learned the A's are moving to Sacramento. I thought they were moving to Vegas?
reply
They are, in theory, but Vegas hasn't built the stadium yet, and it'll take some time. Meanwhile, the lease in Oakland is up this season, and it's possible that Sacramento may make a better offer.
reply
That's right. They were haggling over the land development plan. I did hear about that but I just assumed they would stay in Oakland until that is sorted.
Without getting into the politics of it all. It has got to be pretty rough for Oakland to lose all three of their major sports franchises in the span of a decade. I know the Warriors just moved across the Bay to SF but still an L for Oakland.
reply
Yeah, for fans (especially kids), it just hurts losing a team, regardless of the reason. I lived in Atlanta when the Thrashers debuted there and left right when they moved, and I know a lot of folks who felt that like a punch in the gut.

I have family in the Montreal area and they are still pissed about the Expos leaving two decades ago.
