A study conducted in the Netherlands discovered that learning new vocabulary in a foreign language can impede the recall of words from another, previously learned foreign language. The research found that native Dutch speakers who learned Spanish translations for English words they already knew experienced more difficulty in recalling those English words later. The paper was published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.

Yeah, most definitely the similar languages overlap but this doesn't mean you can't get lost in the specifics...

I had the thought that maybe if they are similar it might make it more difficult. For me, it seems like know if 2 languages that are quite different would be an easier switch in the brain. I only speak English so I have no idea what I am talking about, though.
