I don't mean to imply that no one is trying to do the right thing. I know plenty of government workers and some do have legitimately good intentions.
My point is more that there's no reason to give government actions the benefit of the doubt. Even if people of good will were responsible for pushing something, it likely got enacted for non-altruistic reasons. That could be as mundane as placating the public.
