Mauritania is home to one of the longest and heaviest trains in the world, which crosses more than 700km in the Sahara desert, with temperatures reaching 48 degrees. Known as the backbone of the Sahara, the Mauritanian railway connects the mining town of Zouerat to the port city of Nouadhibou on the Atlantic coast.
