A 'B' that is slightly off-center, with two vertical lines and a vibrant orange background. The Bitcoin logo is now immediately recognizable, but it sparks many questions about its meaning.
The first proposal was by... Satoshi Nakamoto
The logo as we know it today has not always looked this way! The first version was indeed imagined by Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. In the original Bitcoin white paper, Nakamoto included a simple sketch of the logo, representing a stylized gold coin with two letters BC over it.
The color orange was not specified originally. In 2010, Satoshi Nakamoto proposed a new version, where 'BC' disappeared, leaving only the ₿ of Bitcoin, but still on this gold coin, symbolizing the idea of value.
When users took over the logo design
It was in 2010 that the logo we know today was finally adopted. Bitboy, a Bitcoin forum enthusiast, shared improvements to the logo and freely published his proposals. The logo we have today received consensus from the community after being proposed with various changes.
Why orange?
The choice of orange for the Bitcoin logo has never been clearly explained, leaving room for multiple interpretations. The most common and accepted one today is that orange contrasts perfectly on any surface and stands out clearly from other payment methods.
In color psychology, orange is also generally associated with sharing, dynamism, and altruism. It can also evoke warmth, energy, and creativity. In the context of Bitcoin, these attributes are therefore clearly interpreted as reflecting its revolutionary and innovative spirit, as well as its infinite potential for growth and adaptability.
