Prior to this, someone would have needed a smartphone to use bitcoin to buy airtime.
Now those with a simple feature phone even can use bitcoin they receive to purchase airtime for themselves, without first having to find a way to "cash-out" into the local currency.

Yes, USSD support is built into GSM smartphones as well. USSD is used for online banking, and many banks have either built apps today and migrated their users from UUSD, or they support both apps and USSD.
