I dare say that Ethereum has cemented its position as top crypto in the hearts of citizens and government alike in Singapore. Sorry, Bitcoin.
Back in 2021, a State of Crypto report initiated by Gemini revealed that ETH was the most widely held crypto in Singapore. In fact, here’s the relevant extract from the Gemini report:
The COVID pandemic necessitated vaccinations on a nationwide level. Guess which blockchain the Singapore government chose to store the vaccination records regarding COVID vaccine. ETH, of course! You can verify it here: https://www.verify.gov.sg/.
Singapore also serves as the venue for Ethereum Singapore conference. When the 2023 edition was held, prominent speakers Vitalik, Aya Miyaguchi (Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation), and Ed Felten (Co-founder of Arbitrum) took centre stage to deliver speeches. No wonder that event was a resounding success. Singapore seized the opportunity for continuity. Ethereum Singapore 2024 will be held in this little red dot from Sept 16-23.
Singapore is in the thick of action when it comes to ETH. I’m sure that your country isn’t as hard-core fans as us!
I'm sure Singaporeans wanted to use it as a data store rather than as store of value. Also, I'm afraid my views contradict with yours on this data. Not our views actually it's statistica vs a report by Gemini, as you mentioned.
According to a survey conducted in November 2022, Bitcoin was the preferred cryptocurrency among crypto owners in Singapore, with more than 31 percent of respondents indicating that they owned Bitcoin. Following closely behind, Ethereum was reported as the second most owned cryptocurrency during the same period.
