Howdy Stackers!!
Another question from me, just asking with a tinge of seriousness hidden my words. So, kindly take it like that.
I've recently switched gears on SN and must say I've never ever witnessed such a great platform before. TBH, I've never been to Reddit or quora which are said to be similar or as suggested.
However why I love SN this much is a matter for another post. Here I'm just eying at a very specific question which is about all of you.
I've seen people going full time with so many social media platforms. You all know that a bunch of them have the capacity to adopt as full-time work. One of my friend who was a youtuber and he says he used to earn an awesome income from there. But for some reason his channel was sacked by YouTube. So, he is now a jobless and as you know there aren't many platforms which are as same as YouTube.
Now, as he is searching for options, he wants a place where he can be what he is. He is about libertarian and wants to earn a full-time living. So, that brings me to ask all you guys that-
Are you or anyone else has adopted SN way for a full-time living?
Or, SN is just meant for earning a few Sats while learning about Bitcoin?*
Also, for my friend, can he join SN and earn a full-time living or at least some food on the table for him and his family? Waiting for your valuable responses!!!
I'm pretty sure no one is earning a full-time living on Stacker News. At best, I'd say it can be supplemental income for people who are already earning money online or through the Bitcoin economy.
For most of us, it's a slightly lucrative hobby.
If he can get by on about 10k sats per day, then maybe he can make it work, but that's about where the top earners are at right now.
reply
Ok, so it's a 'lucrative hobby' for us. Yeah, you may be right. It has mostly become like this for me within my short time here. Nice perspective. Let's see what others have to say. May be my question can reach a conclusion for others as well about how to take SN for a living or a hobby?
reply
What’s the most you have earned in one day?
reply
Over 500k, but it was a bank error in my favor.
I'm not sure if I've ever even cracked 20k, aside from one-offs, like MSM or winning one of the sports contests.
reply
It's not about me only, it's just A General question for every newcomer, if m right.
reply
Oh! Sorry, I meant to ask him that question.
reply
Oh! Alright.
reply
Trying to get 10k will be hard for some of the new posters, though.
reply
Ha! 10k’s pretty hard for all of us.
reply
I thought I was just slacking lol I have seen some newer stackers make more than me already. Maybe I need to change my ways.
reply
I wouldn’t worry too much about it, but it doesn’t hurt to be introspective.
When in doubt, find more stuff to zap.
reply
Yeah, I always zap the things I am interested in. I try not to indiscriminately zap.
reply
Do you look through “recent” for stuff?
That would be the only real tip I’d offer. You get more rewards when you zap good content before others do.
reply
Yes I look through and read alot.

... can he join SN and earn a full-time living or at least some food on the table for him and his family?
A quick scan through the responses to your question so far seems to reveal a consensus that SN probably cannot (yet?) provide for a "full-time living" in most countries.
Something I've been wondering about for quite a while now, is how accurate stackers really track their time spent on (or for) SN. I suspect we don't really want to admit how time-consuming it can become.
reply
Yes, you're right. Sometimes it may take a lot of time. There are many posts that require serious consideration.
reply
To me SN is a way of getting comfortable moving sats around and learning more about Bitcoin. The sats I eventually stack are a nice bonus, but not my main goal.
reply
that's a good point about getting comfy moving sats around here, I hadn't thought about it before
reply
Also, if your friend's goal is to avoid the risk of being deplatformed, SN may not be the solution he's looking for. It is still centralised, even if the people in charge have shown themselves not to try to abuse that power. Maybe look into NOSTR and clients built on top of it that provide YouTube functionality. And then, maybe complement it with SN to promote it and increase its earning potential.
reply
A great reply. Nostr is the way to be for the purely decentralised and permission less social media
reply
No, I'm definitely not earning full time with SN nor do I plan to, I like posting and earning some sats for it, but what I like most is the community and the shared content.
reply
I earned about 250k sats in two months. That translates to about $200 in my currency. It helped me buy some groceries and order takeout, but I wouldn’t count on SN as a full-time job

My aunt with Parkinson's in the Philippines pays her caregiver $300 a month and she does EVERYTHING for her.
That would be pretty good money / workload compared to her job.
reply
I guess that’s why Axie Infinity was such a huge hit in the Philippines. N how many people move out of the country to work as domestic helpers or even as teachers in the States

Yeah our biggest export sadly is human labor. Sucks especially when they get trapped in indentured servitude in places like Dubai. Great when they end up as nurses making 200k+ USD in California.
reply
Wow! Congrats!
How much time, if you can calculate it for the sake of this question, you gave on daily basis?
reply
This is an interesting question. Interesting to consider what it would take to make SN a full time job as a contributor. There's more you can get zapped for than just posting content, so a strategic person could leverage all the ways of manipulating SN for profit. Hmmm.... The things that make you popular and profitable at other sites won't work here. There's a delicate incentives scheme, and it is very precious to me. Don't fuck with it haha.
reply
Yes you're right. SN is a platform for honest work
Thanks and I read your poem yesterday. I must say that is awesome.
reply
oh that's nice, appreciate it!

For me it has been a good social aggregator to speak about Bitcoin. I don't find it a full alternative or make a living of it.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll put it like this: If you're active and the people like what they read, the heap will grow, but in small steps.
It's nothing one could sustain themselves with, hence why I use it as a sort of "piggy bank"; some day, it'll buy me something. 😜
reply
It's nothing one could sustain themselves with
Can it be in future? What do you say?
reply
Nah, I don't think so.
reply
I think it’s great as a hobby where you can earn some sats but I wouldn’t considerate it as main income.
reply
Thanks for the reply.
reply
It's not a living, but it's honest work is what I always think.
I would suspect that people here who do get enough zaps for their comments can probably monetize that better in other ways. But SN seems fun :)
reply
Honest work. Yes, it is! That's what I love about SN.
reply
I don't think trying to earn a living off of SN even if you live frugally is an efficient use of your time if you need money. Also, even if it was possible, people trying to maximize earnings on SN as opposed to maximizing fun and learning would definitely erode the value proposition of the site.
reply
Yes, you're right. I believe in the same notion. But what if someone justifies it by providing some fun and valuable content and also earning good zaps on the way. Would be ok then?
reply
Sure but with a rewards pool of say 120k sats a day and top posts getting a few thousand sats. I think feasibly someone could maybe stack 10-15k sats a day without disrupting the overall value of the site. If only one person is making all the top posts and earnings people won't be that interested anymore. I guess if you lived somewhere where you could live on $5 it might be feasible.
reply
I know a lot of people here in my country can live on that amount. But surely not I, not my friend.

Yup, I've said it before but some people I met in the Philippines make $6-7 USD/day, for very tough jobs (caregiver etc).
I bet if you copied the most popular posts off of /r/Bitcoin, even just 1-2 posts a day and spent the day feeding posts to ChatGPT to come up with articulate responses to popular posts you could easily clear that amount.
reply
not full-time, sats wise more like coffee money, but the things I've learned here are really valuable, not to mention all the fun I had here.
reply
Last year SN was exploited using a wallet-drain bug #217122
But the user who found those neglected sats decided to give most of them back.
Maybe he would have been the first user to earn a living on SN
reply
To tell you the truth, a few beers a week in India can cost you the same amounts as you can enjoy 2 times meal everyday for 7 days. The cost of food is relatively less here.
reply
Indeed. I have earned more from SN this week than I would have earned by mining with a single antminer s19 post-halving.
If you can write popular content about bitcoin in English while living in a low-cost country, it's certainly possible SN can pay for your groceries.
reply
Wow, I never heard about this, I wasn't here then. Thanks for reminding us about it.

reply
Yes, I know. I like your posts.
reply
Many thanks sir 🙏
This confession actually motivates me to continue my part time adventure ♥️
reply
I dont know if you can actually make a living with SN. Unless you work for SN or are one of the founding members? That is not really what this place is for though.
reply
No, I mean by posting only.
Can it be one in future? What do you say?
reply
I dont know what kind of life you live. Maybe in a country where the GDP is not so high, it might be possible.
reply
I've adopted SN as a full-time platform, but not for living.
For me, it not for earning, it's kind of a learning platform.
I won't reply in negative for your friend. I think he should join and give it a try for one month. May be he can be the first one to start earning full-time living from SN. Then, he can be an example for others as well.
What I mean that I'm open for all possibilities.
reply
Thank for your valuable response. Being open minded for all possibilities. Another unique perspective!

alternative ways of contributing to ones income is what all of us do or aim to do whether we use rakuten, lolli, etcetera, side jobs, work for family friends. start a small business. all of these things add value i would argue . i like to pick up satoshis in free time considering possible appreciation , whats earned here today may be worth more tomorrow. to flat replace an income is an ideal many of us strive for but wind up finding we need multiple avenues to offset cost of living.
