I have to say the title seems like wishful thinking to me, but this article contains many interesting tidbits and quotes.

I think the headline strongly overstates the case. The officials quoted in the piece sound like they are giving canned "there, there" responses:
the IRS is actually a big fan of privacy, all we want to do is catch the ransomware guys. You just have to trust us, there's a method to the madness.
Yeah, and what exactly can I keep private from them?
It's above my paygrade, but we all know the real crime happens in the traditional banking system
Of course they know it. That's why they are coming after the little guy and his $600 btc buy and the open source wallet he wants to secure it with.
I don't hear these officials saying anything other then placation.

I agree. In fact that's what I meant about calling the title wishful thinking.

Interesting read.
Hustle thinks freedom tech will render most of governments "duties" obsolete.
In ten years, giving your ID to open a bank account or setup your social media will sound ridiculous. It'll probably be like Sony yelling at people to stop them from using Limewire. They'll need to pivot.

I’d say those duties are already obsolete. Freedom tech will hopefully free us from being subjected to those duties.
I like the future you’re describing.

It seems inevitable, the sovereign individual thesis doesn't care about ice cream Joe.
The world will ask more and more, from governments that can only give less and less.

Actually all people do know the value and capabilities of Bitcoin. Governments are afraid of it because it is only one thing in contemporary world that can challenge (or outpower, reshape, renew) the version of state we have. Bitcoin movement is only known 'against State power movement' currently.
So, it's clear that governments will hate it or try to take it down. But, they will slowly accept that the real power must be vested in the hands of people not in the hands of 'a few people, let us govern us all and hail Bitcoin'..
