You probably have already seen the @hn bot which crawls the top post from hackernews. Or the former bot which was creating Nitter alternatives to Twitter links.
Can you think of any other bot that would make your SN life more pleasant, without opening the pandora box of spammy content?
A bot that periodically curated a selection of past posts, like a newsletter.

Yes, great idea!
Maybe a "This day in Stacker News" type of thing.

+1! We have a winner!

I think that's already the goal of the SN Newsletter posts by Keyan. Not sure they're still happening.
But maybe something that shows random selections of these great posts of the past. Maybe that's what you meant.

Yeah, some sort of weekly or monthly "pinned post" in the "🔥"- section, featuring a given amount of posts from the past.

As a pinned post is fun.
My favorite idea for what this gets at is a random sort option.

Hehe, FOSS team, are you?

I feel like HN Bot works because it's really the only one of its kind here. We've already got issues with links from some sites getting not-quite-spammed, but bots would only increase that.
That said, a bot that's only occasionally posting (like the one @0xbitcoiner suggests) and which is surfacing old and/or overlooked content sounds like it has potential.
reply
Occasional posting, for sure. @hn found a good balance imho.

A bot like no other bot. The most powerful one. The almighty bot! Haha!

None?

Yeah, don't want to get the Twitter style spam where huge bot accounts post annoying engagement farming content.

ITT: bad ideas

Didn't see the ground-break idea just yet, but who knows. Something might be useful.

Some bot to crawl subreddit for territories.
reply
If it helps bring redditers here, why not. But this has to be thought out carefully.

I would like a Bot with updated statistical data about Bitcoin: number of blocks mined in real time, current price, and other data of interest.

How about a @ZappyHourBot, that zaps randomly across the site for a random hour of the day. Any zaps it receives go towards the next Zappy Hour.
reply
Hehe, gotta fund that bot though. Not a rich OG here :)
reply
A nostr bot that gives us an updated 4 hour trending breakdown.
reply
I actually quite like this one. Other than my occasional NOSTR crossposting, I don't regularly visit my NOSTR client these days. Even though I know there are some people that post quality content there, and only there.

No bot on SN. Keep them away, they suck.
I want that everything on SN is beautiful like handicrafts after we buy all factory made things.
reply
I get your point. I agree that good content usually must show some POW. That's also why I usually downvote the annoying generic AI-generated content.

I think an ~earth bot would be nice. My cultural versatility has improved by leaps n bounds since I joined here. I never ceased to be amazed at the variety of nationalities represented here on SN
reply
How would that bot work? Should it crawl data from other resources that show the different cultures of our earth?
