A ship was seen "floating" in the air off the coastal region of Kymi (Greece) last Wednesday (8/5). The optical illusion involving the ship Aquileas went viral on social media. But what is this phenomenon on the Greek horizon about?
The phenomenon is known as fata morgana (named after a witch in the story of King Arthur) or superior mirage, an illusion caused by hot air meeting cold water, creating a thermal inversion.

In calm weather, the regular separation between hot air and cold (denser) air near the Earth's surface can act as a refracting lens, producing an inverted image, on which the distant image appears to float, as seen in the images.
