This day in sports history (Bitcoin Pizza Day)
You may have heard, but today is Bitcoin Pizza day. That's right 14 years ago today Laszlo Hanyecz purchased two Papa John's pizzas for a mere 10,000 bitcoins. What a deal!
One of my favourite types of posts to do is a look back at what was happening in the sports world on notable days in Bitcoin history. So here goes:
May 22, 2010
  • The Boston Celtics defeated the Orlando Magic 94-71 to take a 3-0 series lead (they would go on to win 4-2) in the 2010 NBA Eastern Conference Finals. Glen Davis led the Celtics in scoring with 17 points and Vince Carter led the Magic with 15 points.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-0 to take a 3-1 lead (they would go on to win 4-1) in the 2010 NHL Eastern Conference Finals. Claude Giroux led the Flyers in scoring with 2 goals and Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton stopped 17 shots for the shutout.
  • Inter Milan defeated Bayern Munich 2-0 to win the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League final.
I wonder if Laszlo was watching any of these games while enjoying his Bitcoin bought pizza.
Sats for all, GR
Also on that day: The Mets beat the Yankees. Which is the definition of a good day, even if it was just a regular season game.
reply
Any day the Yankees lose is a good day in my book.
reply
Wasn't Laszlo from FL? So the Magic stand a chance.
reply
Yes I believe you are correct. Enjoy the rangers game tonight.
reply
Thanks! Not the greatest start but it's only 1 period
reply
Was watching for a bit. Didn’t see the goal.
reply
Errr only 1 game

I have no recollection of Vince Carter playing for the Magic.
reply
Me either but the internet says it is so.
"Carter appeared in 97 games across two seasons with the Magic, averaging 16.3 points per game. He averaged 15.5 points per game during the Magic's 2010 Playoff run."

I think the Magic added him for extra perimeter shooting around Dwight Howard. They had just reached the finals the previous year, but got cooked by the Lakers 4-1. They were running it back with the same core, but fell short to Boston in the ECF.
reply
They've had a rough go of trying to build contenders: Penny blew out his knee, Grant Hill's surgeon almost killed him, Dwight's just a huge weirdo.
Maybe they'll have better luck with this current squad.
reply
Fun Fact: My wife's niece was a big Lakers fan as a kid and she became a Dwight Howard fan when he was an all star for the Lakers back in 2012. Even though he only played there a year before moving on to Houston she named a puppy she got Dwight Howard. It's a 3lb Chihuahua.
She is grown up now but dog is still alive and she kept the name. She named her next dog Athena. Probably a better choice. Haha.

That's hilarious

I put it on the Magic organization to have drafted Shaq but was not able to keep him there. To draft a generational talent and only keep him for 4 years is just horrible, no excuses.
I do like to looks of the current squad though. Banchero already plays great and still has great potential to grow. The young guys surrounding him are good players too. If they don't mess it up again, this squad might have some success in the post season a few years down the road.
reply
Do you remember when Shaq tore down the whole backboard.
reply
I’m not sure if I remember that from when it happened or just from seeing it replayed for the past 30 years.
I think they had to substantially redesign NBA hoops because of him.
reply
Wow that really was over 30 years ago. I must be old. Feels like yesterday.
Dallas is scoring more on Minny D than I thought they would.
How do you all feel about Vince Carter today?
reply
Vince is a legend. Canada basketball wouldn't be half of what it has become without Vince.
Regardless of the playoff failures and the way it ended with the Raptors, what he did to energize and inspire Canadian youth "to be like Vince" is really immeasurable. For a time he was our version of Michael Jordan who just took the game to a whole new level of popularity.
reply
I'm glad to hear that.
He was one of the more disappointing players, in terms of falling short of what seemed to be his potential, but he was also the most exciting show in sports for several years.
reply
I think Lowry goes down as the greatest Raptor of all time but I would put Vince, Bosh, Spicy P and Kawhi (even though it was only one year- he won them the championship) in the next tier.
reply
Tough break for DeRozan
reply
Oh man I forgot DeRozan. My bad. No he is in the upper echelon with Vince, Bosh, Spicy P and Kawhi.
