The pain of a crisis is essentially like the pain of childbirth, and the pain of childbirth is not a disease but it is creative. It contributes to a new person coming into the world. 

So, the pain of a crisis contributes to a person finding a new face (personality). This may not yet be the final pain, since other 'births' will also follow later...
