Wasabi Wallet's newest release just made coinjoining with new coordinators 1000x safer. So far it's the biggest improvement to Bitcoin privacy we could have hoped for. Here's why:
New coordinators usually come with new clients. New clients may operate malicious code, putting your funds at risk of theft. By adding custom coordinators to Wasabi Wallet, you can be sure that the code you are running is not malicious.
This means that you can now use new coordinators without putting your funds at risk.
Do new coordinators still have drawbacks? Absolutely. Privacy will likely not be comparable to zkSnacks due to lower liquidity on new coordinators. New coordinators will additionally be cautious about advertising services, making new coordinators hard to find (though you can use BTCPay's coinjoin plugin for discovery, which also allows anyone to become a coordinator). Is Bitcoin privacy still in a bad state? Absolutely. But the future is brighter than it was yesterday.
PSA: The original article has been updated to reflect security improvements for coordination as I completely missed this while writing the OP.
