If mars is on the other side of the sun, it would be a while before it swings back around. I think?

Either of you play Kerbal Space Program? That's where I learned all my orbital mechanics. But the answer is yes the planets need to be aligned, but mainly as a fuel saving maneuver to reach the planet with least energy expenditure
