Either of you play Kerbal Space Program? That's where I learned all my orbital mechanics. But the answer is yes the planets need to be aligned, but mainly as a fuel saving maneuver to reach the planet with least energy expenditure

The first season of The Expanse did a great job of portraying orbital mechanics.
