Hi everyone, I just installed Linux (Debian) on a spare laptop and I'm now looking for a good shell to use. I've used Bash in the past but am open to trying something different (zsh? fish? others?) if there are any recommendations. What shells do you guys use and why?

Thanks!

I use zsh. It's great, but I don't use it for anything that bash can't provide. Fish is not POSIX-compliant (not that I care, and probably neither you), and excellent out of the box, you should try it

reply

zsh ohmyz.sh

Can't say why I favor it, it just works well for me, autocomplete, configurability..

reply

zsh for me too

reply

fish is extremely good, especially for beginners.

Most notable features are very good autocompletion for many programs, as well as very intuitive history.

All of this can be done in other shells with custom scripts, addons and configuration, but fish provides all of this out of the box.

reply

I love fish because it does everything for me out of the box.

I enjoy zsh if you absolutely need bash compatibility (I recommend just calling bash directly though) but I don’t like relying on third-party plugins like oh-my-zsh for something as essential and high security as the shell.

reply

I use zsh because it's the default shell on MacOS. I try not to spoil myself too much with shells, because in the past I used to spend a lot of time on remote machines where I'd have to use a more Spartan shell.

I am new on SN,

reply

Thanks for that knowledge.

Love the line "Bash in the past" and I don't know why...

reply

I use windows 7,10,11 and macos , for Linux I also need some details about it,

is it usefull? Why should we use that? What's its benefits? Can it replace windows or macos?

reply

Yes, nicest OS, open, yes.

reply

I use PowerShell on Linux.

reply

Is this ironic? Genuinely asking, didn’t know that was possible.

reply

I’m not the poster, but I actually do enjoy PowerShell. I’m mostly a Linux admin but I could totally see a shop where they orchestrate all systems with PowerShell.

reply

zsh, but in reality it's just small differences...

reply

May I ask if it is your first debian or gnu/linux? What do you use on your battle laptop?

reply

I have been a bash users for a long time. I've used zsh and I would say its the best alternative to bash.

reply

zsh hands down

reply

I like zsh the most. The only downside is that once you get used to it, it is very difficult to go back to bash ;)
