The only thing required to perform unauthenticated remote code execution is physical proximity. CVE-2024-30078 an 8.8 out of 10. It affects all versions of Windows, so if you're running Windows, update immediately.
Thanks. I am running windows.

Why? I would be paranoid all the time using Windows. Have you tried Linux? You may like it. In my Linux I have a virtual machine with a windows installation for testing things and I see all the constant connections it does in the background. I would have nightmares using it.
reply
Because that's what came installed on my laptop. I really don't have any other excuse. I of course have heard of Linux but I haven't really researched or learned much about it. I will put it on my to do list.

great. To break the ice, you can have a taste of it installing it on a USB pen drive or a USB external hard disk, and boot from there without installing or touching your internal hard disk. I recommend you to use one with KDE which has an interface more similar to Windows than others. Maybe it won't be as fast as installing it on your system but you can use it and see if you like it and have all apps you need. So you can always return to Windows as if nothing happened :)

Mee too.

All Windows users warned to update now… to any Linux distro. You will thank me later.

Updating windows ain't gonna make it suddenly secure.

I am still running windows. But searching for a good option.

Linux is your option.

Ok I will learn about it. How it works and it's benifits. Then definitely use it, if found good.

Major vulnerability. Yikes, we need more operating systems that Apple, Windows for normies. Linux is great, but we need something out of the box easy for normies.

I think Linux is nearly there. We mostly need more manufacturers to embrace Linux to make it more turnkey. There are already a few like Purism doing this.

And system76! Pop_os is really good for beginners. I made the switch to Linux using system 76. It hasn’t been 100% easy but it got me off the windows OS

love system76 stuff.

I think the biggest problem that Linux has is that people are used to Windows.
If people would grow up with Linux they would find Windows hard to use (like I do now).

i agree. it has come a long way. i can see it stepping into the spotlight within the next decade. factors are brewing for it:
  • privacy minded people looking for alternatives
  • open source projects becoming more popular, and easier to setup
  • distributed operating systems, apps, .. i don't know everything? nostrweb? [this one is really interesting to watch]
  • decentralization of everything
i think it just takes a curious mind. ai might be the deciding factor in a few years (or now if you're already there lol).

I'll go and update it, a bit with a glazed face, because I'm aware that Windows = surveillance, but as long as I'm taking advantage of state education, it looks like I'm forced to use this crap, because Liebre Office is ruining itself by using Microsoft crap, and I still have to work on it presentations, reports and other shit. Added to this is the complete lack of programming knowledge and I'm deeply pissed and I apologize.
reply
Well, guess I'm gonna stop using windows. Shit's insecure. ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯

For these reasons, we have been crying for replacing windows with Linux.
Linux is much safer. Isn't it?

Lot of people are using this as an indictment against Windows. The fact is code will have bugs and vulnerabilities, even the most defensively coded Rust code.
The important thing is having a good software cycle where you can address these vulnerabilities swiftly and effectively. Linux does not have some security silver bullet under its sleeve and needs to be treated with as much due diligence as Windows- because it’s code all the same.

Windows has so many back doors. Updating will help, but hackers will always be able to get into an unsecure computer.

I don't use computers but I'm planning to buy a new one with Linux. Are there other privacy oriented os?

Every time I read an article like this I am just relieved I got all that Microsoft crap out of my house.
