Abel Mutai, representing Kenya, was a few meters from the finish line in an athletics race. He was confused by the signage and stopped, thinking he had finished the race.
The Spanish athlete, Ivan Fernandez, was behind him, and when he realized what was happening, he started yelling at Abel to keep running, but Mutai did not speak Spanish and did not understand.
So the Spanish athlete pushed him across the finish line and the Kenyan athlete won the race.
A journalist asked Ivan: "Why did you do that? Why did you let the Kenyan win? Ivan replied: "I didn't let him win, he was winning. The reporter insisted again: "But you could have won! Ivan looked at him and replied: "But what would have been the merit of my victory? What would have been the honor of this medal for me? What would my mother have thought about it?".
Do you agree with Ivan’s decision?
Sure.. Loosing with pride says alot.
