Not sure whether to be sad or laugh at this article about the Japanese Govt still using floppy disks until very recently .. but from a bitcoiner's perspective, it highlights that technology changes over time, and storage and interfaces we use today will eventually be phased out and replaced with something superior
Some of the tech I've used that's now just history:
- punched cards
- paper tape
- mag tape
- 8" floppy disks
- 5 1/4" floppy disks
- 3 1/2" floppy disks
- CD's
- DVD's The examples and the progression is clear - we replace when we innovate and improve :-)
The lesson to take from this is to understand your timeline when thinking about bitcoin key storage
If you're using a device that requires plugging it into a USB-A connection, they're unlikely to be around in 10 years. If you're using MicroSD cards probably a shorter time.
CHECK your bitcoin keys every year (at least) REVIEW your bitcoin key storage every epoch
A good rule of thumb is: If bitcoin price suddenly 10x's, will you still sleep well :-)
