The block explorer indexes the bitcoin blockchain, and allows exploring which outputs contain which ordinals, and their properties.

There's a long blog post here that I definitely recommend checking out, but the basics are that every satoshi is assigned an number, dubbed an "ordinal number", and you can track those numbers from output to output.

This is kind of a fun art project at this point, and lets you collect rare and exotic sats.
