In the modern digital era, social media has changed - against my will - the way I, the human animal, feel, think or interact with the world around me. Social media has brought many negative effects - some think it has brought many good things too, but I'm not sure - but one of the most negative effects of social media is the creation of a fake self-image.
So the human animal has abandoned its rationality, which is what distinguishes it from other animals, and has been enslaved to the false sense of pleasure that comes from posting carefully curated photos, presenting a version of himself that is idealized and camouflaged through the use of many digital filters. In this way, I manage to hide the real me and the true reality of my everyday life. As a result, the true perception that I create for myself and others does not match reality. This reminds me of a quote from Dostojewski:
A man who lies to himself and believes his own lies becomes unable to recognize the truth, either in himself or in anyone else, and he ends up losing respect for himself and for others.
That is tragic: to lie to yourself and end up believing that lie.
It is always good to be aware of these emotional and psychological consequences as one uses social media. Such use of the platforms is associated with fatigue, anxiousness, and loneliness, among other symptoms. Because of this, it is necessary to already know how one spends time in social networks and establish a reasonable working schedule for him.
What about the stackers of this great forum, do they use any social media platforms at all?
I've given them all up, not that I was a heavy user before, except for SN and nostr.
One of the first things I noticed about Stacker News is that it feels like there are real people here. It's very different than the one-dimensional self-caricatures I noticed elsewhere (with some exceptions).

I’m having the same feeling so far. 😊

patiently waiting for SN to consume reddit. Still like the diversity of topics outside of BTC.

There'll be a quantum leap when Stacker News posts start showing up in search engine results.

Your will has nothing to do with it, it's how you react to change, to each his own. You either resist (and ignore) or you adapt, you can't stop it. Technology it is like the river it just keeps flowing. It changed the way we interact, social media brought people together regardless of distance, that's positive. You can now interact with your cousins you haven't seen for years, that might be a good or a bad thing, depends on your family :-) I agree that it does have impact on us, but what kind of impact is for each of us to decide. YMMV.

Not at all. I've given up all social medias except WhatsApp in 2015. Has to remain on WhatsApp only because of the information by my college where I worked. I left my job last year and with that I also got rid of social media completely.

After I found SN, I drastically cut down on my usage of Facebook n Instagram. But I still use them - as a way to connect with irl friends n contacts
I have taken to the idea of posting my FB status updates here on SN. Why not, right? It sparks joy that something I wrote many years ago will help fund my current lifestyle.

I only use social media, but only if it has a business purpose. For example I never consume content on instagram/facebook/linkedin. I always post on these sites though!
The one exception is X. That thing is like a dopamine factory. To be fair though, I post a lot. Far too often people consume too much content without actually producing content. I think that can be a problem, as you are essentially just burning time (to each his own though).

The negative effects of social media on the human psyche are clear, which makes us strive to achieve a balance in its use. It is necessary to be conscious of the time we spend on it to ensure our mental health.

and nostr (no ads decentralised protocol)

We always try to show the best of us in public, you dress well when going out, you smile in photographs. Odds are all the people in your old analog photo books are smiling, are they faking a better life? Just like bitcoin does not equal crime social media does not equal vanity. Relax.
reply
Do you consider the same thing dressing well and smiling in photos with posting on social media by altering the reality?
Relax
Thanks. I’m very relaxed. 😎

you mean the "filters"? that's a fad

I only found SN in the beginning of this year.
SN is social media or not, I can't comment. But I'm sure it's bigger and better all of those time or life sucking wolves that you can be a slave of. You give your time for free there, in return those big companies earn from advertisement. Interestingly, you are the slave employees who don't get paid for your time and work there.

Totally agree.
Before coming to SN, I used social media platforms. But now no social media platform

Great decision!
